Salt Mines – The Andes

Known as Salinas de Maras, the mines have been a source of salt since ancient times by the Incas. There are nearly 3000 wells where salt water is channeled after bubbling to the surface from a spring called Qoripujio. The exposure to the sun at the surface in the wells causes the water to evaporate, leaving the crystal salt behind. The salt mines are located in the town of Mara in the Sacred Valley.
