Like other lands in Asia, Thailand is home to many cave dwellings that are both places of pilgrimage and solitary retreat. The caverns often house Buddhist images ensconced in its chambers. These impressive dwellings are quiet and remain cool in the squelching summer months while mild in winter.
The monks take refuge in the large stone alcoves, ensconced in the solitary recesses for great periods of contemplation. At times the airy chamber is illuminated by shafts of light beaming through a gap in the roof, and despite the caves darkness, the moving rays bathed the meditative sitter, his face utterly serene.
