Rice has fed more people over a longer time than has any other crop in history. Throughout Asia it has been a necessary ritual for centuries. Some people kept their ways of farming as their secret and considered each grain as a precious gift.
Situated in North West Vietnam, Sa Pa Terraces is home to stunning rice terraces. Terraces are often far removed and many unfold behind mountains, cascading down the perilous slopes in breath taking forms. They created art amongst their mountains.
On the day I made this photograph it was raining. I stood beneath my umbrella for some hours waiting for the weather to break. Finally, toward the end of the day, the downpour paused and people began to head home. I will never forget this young woman running across the fields. She leapt across the terraces with joyful abandon. And I could not stop smiling.
