Children worldwide live in the moment. There is beauty to be found in a child playing outdoors who might trip on a tree root, fall and begin to cry, only to be distracted by a passing butterfly. Kids do not take tiny blessings for granted and often smile with no apparent cause. A grin might bloom due to the pleasure they take in connecting with another person, or because of a glimmer of thought that springs into a child’s mind in response to light, color, temperature, sounds, surprises, or suspense.
This young girl from Cité Soleil, one of Haiti’s most perilous neighborhoods, radiated joy in a place shadowed by hardship. Amid the sound of distant unrest, she laughs, tilts her head askew, giggles at a playful interaction. It was a silly moment we shared, but also made memorable because it was filled with engagement and two people being entirely present to each other.
Many agree that black-and-white images will forever be timeless. A photo made yesterday or a century in the past is a visual symbol of then, now, and forever. Lives that organically tilt toward joy begins in childhood and for adults, need never stop; if only we will remember to see the butterfly and repeat, repeat, repeat.
