Bridge of Sighs in Venice

Bridge of Sighs – Venice

Limited Edition

The haunting Bridge of Sighs spans over Venice’s Rio Palazzo waterway. The bridge was hand-crafted in the 1600s from white limestone. The small expanse connects the Prigioni Nuove, the “New Prison” to the Doge’s Palace, or interrogation rooms of the prison. Most likely, the men who traversed the expanse were convicts. The bridge’s name, “Ponte dei sospiri,” refers to these soul’s mournful ‘sigh’ upon their final glimpse of exquisite Venice while being led to the cold stone cells below.

Another more romantic theory suggests the ‘sigh’ is born from a kiss shared beneath the bridge while aboard a Gondola. This kiss comes with a promise of eternal love.
