Especially for those born in a frigid climate, the amazing pelt worn by an eagle hunter in Mongolia and seen in this image is life-preserving. When I arrived, he greeted me, impervious to the cold, with breathtaking command.
We tend in the West to dress for presentation; but in that moment I recall thinking only, “This man cloaks himself in fox fur that is magnificent and necessary at the same time.” There was a statement of “I am. I wear my strength and power and survive.” There was no suggestion of, “Look at me in my fancy coat.”
The red tassel has no explanation that I know of, but I love it. Although it is small, it’s color makes it utterly noticeable. Perhaps it’s a dash of presentation after all? Or it’s possible there is significance to the adornment on his hat. What I love is that it was just there.
The breath you see in light steam escaping his mouth proves the severity of the cold. The gaze in his eyes declares he is a master hunter. He will not succumb to fear or wither in the face of a fearful climate. May I be so brave when staring into the cold heart of someone who might be warmed, if only I offer protection and love that melts.
