Celebrating Our Ancestors

This image made in Oaxaca celebrates Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) as a meaningful, colorful connection to our ancestors. On this day, the loss of a loved one is dark and painful but also brilliantly enlightened, heralded, and extended into immortality by memory. People who join to honor their dead exude life and liveliness in song, dance, artwork, storytelling, and physical adornment such as this young person in Mexico.

Looking into her eyes and painted face means recognizing those who have passed and honoring the dead. Her headdress of blossoms, the crimson red of her cloak, and the glow of gold earrings and necklace exude warmth, energy, nurturance, durability…eternity.

This week, I join a global community as we lift up our ancestors and life everlasting. Come, pay tribute, be part of the party: all are invited.
