“Art doesn’t just reflect our world—it shapes it.”

This summer, I had the profound honor of participating in the Satyarthi Summer School, a transformative gathering created by Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi. Designed to cultivate the next generation of compassionate leaders, the program unites young changemakers from around the globe who are committed to social justice, child rights, and a world anchored in human dignity.

Cultivating Empathy and Action

Held annually in partnership with the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation and Harvard University’s FXB Center for Health and Human Rights, the Summer School offers more than just education. It is a living, breathing call to action. Through lectures, immersive workshops, and community dialogue, participants are guided to lead with empathy—and to transform that empathy into bold, deliberate action against injustice.

In a world where statistics can numb and headlines can harden, the heart remains our most powerful compass. That belief was the foundation of my session, “Seeing With the Heart: Using Photography to Inspire Social Change.”

A Window Into Shared Humanity

As I stood before these passionate, hopeful young leaders, I invited them on a journey—not just through the lens of my camera, but through the lives and dignity of those I’ve photographed. We explored what it means to use photography as a force for justice, how images can bypass indifference, and how stories—when told ethically—can stir the soul and awaken action.

Together, we asked important questions:

  • How can creative tools spark social change?

  • What does it mean to tell a story with integrity?

  • How can compassion illuminate even the darkest truths?

Each question brought us closer to a deeper understanding—not only of the world’s wounds but also of its resilience, beauty, and possibility.

A Personal Reflection: Bearing Witness Through the Lens

Throughout my decades of fieldwork and the founding of the Human Thread Foundation, I’ve seen firsthand the power of art to reveal truth and restore dignity. Whether in remote Himalayan villages or bustling urban centers, I’ve encountered individuals whose courage defies description. Survivors of modern-day slavery, children denied their rights, elders striving to preserve endangered cultures—each one of them has a story that the world must hear.

Photography allows me to bear witness. But more than that, it allows me to invite others to see—not just with their eyes, but with their hearts.

United by a Shared Mission

The Human Thread Foundation and the Satyarthi Summer School are kindred in spirit. Both seek to amplify unheard voices, dismantle systems of exploitation, and reawaken the moral imagination. Both believe in the sacredness of every human life.

To be part of this vibrant, justice-driven community was to be reminded that the movement for change is alive and growing. And that together, through art, empathy, and advocacy, we can indeed move the world.

A Call to Hope and Courage

If there is one truth that echoed throughout this summer, it is this: change begins when we truly see one another. When we slow down long enough to listen. When we allow our hearts to break—and to act.

Let us not turn away from suffering. Let us use our gifts to illuminate it—and to end it.
