In the Glow of the Flame

There are moments when time folds inward. A flicker of light seems to illuminate not just a space, but a soul. Inside a centuries-old temple in Bagan, Myanmar, I found such a moment. It was quiet. Reverent. And yet, the air shimmered with the playful presence of two novice monks. One boy, mesmerized by a single candle’s glow, held a stillness that felt ancient. Beside him, another leaned sleepily against the temple wall, half-dreaming. This sweet contrast, so ordinary, so profound, captivated me.

The Everyday Rituals of Sacred Spaces

Bagan, with its thousands of temples rising like stone prayers into the sky, is steeped in ritual and devotion. Here, spiritual practice is embedded into the rhythm of daily life. Inside one such temple, beneath the shadow of a reclining Buddha, I witnessed a scene that felt both deeply spiritual and quietly human. These boys, so young and small in the grandeur of their surroundings, were engaged in a simple ritual that has been repeated across generations. The act of lighting candles, offering silent prayers, sitting in the presence of sacred icons, each of these is both practice and poetry.

They weren’t intimidated by the Buddha’s scale. They belonged there.

A Quiet Moment, A Lasting Memory

I remember how they moved with gentle intention, almost as if the space itself whispered to them to be still. Their faces, lit by warm candlelight, revealed more than ceremony. There was curiosity, reverence, and a quiet kind of joy. I imagined their laughter echoing just outside the temple walls. Perhaps these same boys might moments later chase each other barefoot across the dust, their robes flaring behind them in bright bursts of color.

What does it mean to hold stillness and playfulness in the same breath? To be young, and yet carry centuries of tradition in your daily life?

This duality, the sacred and the simple, is something I try to capture through my lens again and again.

The Power of Small Moments in Global Humanitarian Projects

In my work as a humanitarian photographer, it is often the smallest, quietest gestures that speak loudest. Whether it’s a glance, a shared smile, or the lighting of a single flame, these moments connect us across cultures and continents. They reveal the dignity, hope, and potential within every human being, especially within the young, who carry our collective future.

To witness a child in reflection, in prayer, is to witness a seed of transformation being planted.

These novice monks may one day become spiritual leaders, teachers, or caregivers. But even if they do not take a formal path, their exposure to a life of mindfulness, however brief, can create ripples of empathy and awareness in all they do.

Sacred Childhood in a Wider World

This moment in Bagan is one of many stories I’ve encountered while documenting global cultures and traditions. From the Himalayas to the Sahara, from bustling cities to remote villages, I see again and again how spiritual rituals and cultural practices shape young lives. They offer structure, identity, and often, comfort in an uncertain world.

But just as importantly, they reveal the power of empathy in art. When we witness these stories through compassionate eyes, we are reminded of our shared humanity. We remember that behind every robe, every ritual, is a child with dreams, laughter, and light.

A Call to See with New Eyes

In a world that moves fast and often overlooks the sacred in the everyday, moments like this ask us to slow down. They call us to see, to really see, the quiet magic of becoming. They remind us that transformation doesn’t always come through grand gestures. Sometimes, it comes through a candle’s flame and the wide-eyed wonder of a boy who believes in something more.
