Bird of Paradise – Papua New Guinea

Huli men are easily distinguished by their dazzling ocher painted faces and cassowary quills, placed through the nasal septa. Their enormous wigs, adorned with Bird of Paradise feathers, are made from the human hair belonging to the man’s wife and children. These highly revered head ornaments are said to contain the spirits of their ancestors. The Huli tribe boasts a most striking people. They do not dwell in villages but rather in homesteads scattered across 2500 square kilometres.
