On Course

This image of a young monk launched on his skiff, his bowl for receiving alms reflecting sunlight softened by clouds, expresses to me the vastness and durability of hope. We view him from behind and I invite one and all to join in his forward-looking gaze. During these times especially, when peace seems so impossibly distant, we need to hold aloft any and all representations of courage, calmness, adventure, generosity, and gratitude.

This boy in Myanmar who is moving through water that reflects an endless, forever-rising sky is experiencing brilliant expectation. His spirit is a mirror of positivity; his firm grounding in things other than material earthly goods leads him to anticipate collecting the many gifts it is his daily work to gather. Not only is his boat supported and balanced upon the river: his physical body and posture and faith are also buoyant; made safe and level by hope and belief even as he moves forth into the unknown landscape of his day.
