“He becomes man-bird and flies.”

In the midst of New York City’s bustling energy and the global intensity of the United Nations General Assembly, a single image rose vividly in my mind: a monk, poised at the edge of the Gangtey Gompa ridge in Bhutan. His crimson robe, caught in a mountain gust, billowed like wings. In that moment, he seemed to transcend time and space, his quiet meditation lifting him beyond the physical realm. He became flight itself. A breath of wind. A spirit unbound.

That image, one I made long ago, now returns to me with a renewed sense of urgency and meaning.

Freedom in a Time of Turbulence

Here in this metropolis where voices from every nation converge, the concept of freedom is woven into nearly every speech, every gathering, every hallway conversation. The winds of our world, political upheaval, environmental fragility, social unrest, can feel overwhelming and chaotic. In the face of such forces, many reach instinctively for control, for dominion, for certainty.

And yet, wind cannot be contained. It moves as it will. We build wind farms to harness its energy, but we cannot order a breeze to come. Nor can we halt a storm once it begins.

In many ways, the wind mirrors our collective human condition. Free yet vulnerable. Powerful yet impermanent.

A Meditative Encounter on the Gangtey Ridge

On that high Bhutanese ridge, I remember standing silently as the monk closed his eyes and turned his face to the wind. There was no resistance in him. No fear. Only presence. The wind was not his adversary. It was his companion. As I raised my camera, I felt the stillness of the moment surge through me. It was the kind of stillness that paradoxically contains great motion and mystery.

That photograph became more than a visual capture. It became a lesson in surrender and strength. What would it mean to live like that? Fully rooted in stillness, yet open to flight?

The Human Spirit and the Wind

Across my journey as a humanitarian photographer, I’ve often seen the wind as metaphor. An invisible yet potent force that shapes landscapes, lives, and legacies. In refugee camps, villages rebuilt after disaster, or communities recovering from injustice, I’ve witnessed the winds of resilience rise within the human spirit.

People endure because they hold tightly to their dignity, because they choose hope when it might be easier not to. Like the monk in Bhutan, they find ways to soar, even in the harshest conditions.

In such moments, human dignity and hope do not simply survive. They transcend.

A Global Reflection on Freedom

As world leaders gather beneath the shimmering skyscrapers of Manhattan, the themes echo across cultures and borders: climate crisis, war, inequality, justice. But underneath it all lies a quieter, perhaps more essential question. What does it mean to be truly free?

To be free is not merely to be unchained. It is to choose compassion over control, to trust in the unseen currents, to lift one another up on the shared winds of possibility.

The monk on the ridge does not conquer the wind. He becomes part of it.

A Call to Rise Together

In these challenging times, may we remember that freedom is not a solitary pursuit. It is a shared one. Like the wind, it is strongest when it moves between us, not against us. May we each find moments to be still, to feel the currents, to rise. Not above one another, but with one another.

Let us become man-bird. Let us fly.
