White Faced Beggar

Nepal

This beggar, unable to move due to deformity and painted in white, lies on his side and chants prayers all day long, every day. Many beggars have given up their life to God, owning little more than the clothing on their backs and a small metal bowl used to catch the coins of passer-byes. In India and Nepal, to give alms is seen as a social responsibility and is encouraged. Because of the disparity between classes and the extreme poverty that exists, begging is sometimes a necessity. Giving to someone in need earns the giver alms essential to the karmic cycle of life.
