Nature’s Daughter

Ethiopia

In the Omo Valley, the Surma tribes express themselves in a truly unique and astonishing way.  Created by the artistic elements provided by nature alone, these ancient tribes have a spectacular way of adorning themselves that could easily influence the avant-garde looks of Haute Couture. Flowers, leaves, grass, mud, and animal horns make dramatic body art, adornments, and headpieces. They have an exquisite and innate sense of form and design. As nomadic people, they don’t have a permanent village or architecture in which to create art. Instead, they use their skin as their canvases, decorating their bodies with mineral pigments from powdered volcanic rock or ochre drawn from river beds, designing “apparel” found from the natural world around them.
