Held

Trafficked during her journey from North Africa, this young woman was still a minor when she was forced to have sex with many men to pay for her passage. She became pregnant after being raped by one of them. Now in a safe house, a caregiver gently places her hands on her belly, a moment defined not by exploitation, but by care, safety and the possibility of what comes next. This Lisa Kristine photograph was made possible by the Galileo Foundation in partnership with the Human Thread Foundation to eradicate slavery and human trafficking.
