Monks live in monasteries scattered along the shores of Inle Lake, the second largest lake in Myanmar. The practice of Theravada Buddhism provides a ritual of collecting alms in the neighboring villages. Novice monks go from village to village collecting alms and food for the monasteries. They go out every day, often barefoot, from household to household. It’s both a solitary pursuit and a community endeavor. A kind of karmic symbiosis. The community he walks among values his purpose and contributes to his personal well-being as well as that of his monastic community. They in turn believe that their generosity will be beneficial in their own day-to-day lives. For me, this is an image beyond what he’s literally doing. Here the morning fog sits on the lake eliminating the horizon between water and sky, inspiring a sense of wonder of what lay ahead. It conjures a metaphor for life: It’s the journey, and being present with the unknown.
