Behind the Clean Room

Southeast Asia

The appearance of a modern, orderly factory tells us little about the freedom of the people working inside it. It begs us to ask: Is this worker being paid fairly, or at all? Does he hold his own passport? Does he owe an illicit recruitment fee that has placed him in debt? Forced labor is not always visible. Sometimes understanding what we are looking at begins with knowing which questions to ask. This image by Lisa Kristine was made possible by the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Foundation in Partnership with Human Thread Foundation to eradicate slavery and human trafficking.
