Arutam

Ecuador

The remote Amazon headwaters along the border of Ecuador and Peru are one of the most biodiverse places on earth. This region is home to over 11,000 Achuar people. The Achuar’s vision for their territory reflects the special connection to their ancestral homeland. Achuar spiritual beliefs dictate they have been living in these river basins since the beginning of time. Streams, hunting grounds, sacred waterfalls and burial sites all tell a story and connect the Achuar with their ancestors. Achuar territory provides everything they need including medicinal plants, and spiritual sites where they search for vision. Arutam is the greatest spirit of the indigenous Achuar people. Arutam is a powerful force that can be sought to enhance their life and spirit. When an Achuar goes on a vision quest, the spirit of Arutam often presents a jaguar, anaconda, or Kapok tree along with other forces of nature. Among the Achuar there is a profound respect for the spirits of the forest and its animals. Their way of life can b best described as a harmony between themselves and their environment. An Achuar warrior sits on the vine of a sacred Kapok tree.
