Modern Slavery

Price of Gold

West Africa

These boys and men are trapped in illegal gold mining, many drawn by the hope of earning enough to change their lives. Instead, they can become bound by fraudulent debt, forced to work in dangerous conditions and required to sell the gold they recover at prices controlled by others. Threats and violence make leaving dangerous. For some, the hope that one more day of work might finally bring freedom becomes part of what keeps them there.
