Gross National Happiness

Bhutan

Novices depart a monastery at Paro Dzong. The Gross National Happiness (GNH) of two novices sends them leaping as they exit a class. Bhutan’s measurement of GNH stands in direct contrast to Western culture’s barometer of a country’s strength, the Gross National Product (GNP). Upholding Bhutan’s “table of happiness,” are four, sturdy legs: cultural and spiritual preservation, socio-economic development, environmental conservation and good governance. The Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck said Bhutan’s policy is purposed “to consolidate our sovereignty to achieve economic self-reliance, prosperity and happiness for our country and (our) people.”
