Dawn’s Silence

Ethiopia

The Arbore tribal communities live in Southern Ethiopia near Lake Chew Bahir, in the South-Western region of the Omo Valley region. Like most tribes in the valley, livestock is the main source of livelihood and is a status symbol. Wealth is measured by the number of cattle owned by a member of the community. The value of cattle is reflected in the name of the Arbore tribe, meaning “land of the bulls”, “Ar” means “bull” and “bore” means “land”. The main aspect that differentiates the Arbore tribe from the other neighboring tribes is their potent spiritual and ritualistic power. Local legend tells that once the devil attacked the tribe, but the Arbore beat them and survived. The Arbore priests are believed to be endowed with exceptional vitality and fortitude. This makes them an unwelcome opponent. The Arbore have little conflict with outlying people, largely due to enemies being intimidated by their power. A young member of the tribe warms herself in the first rays of the morning sun.
