Architectural Study #2

Italy

The Florence Cathedral arrives with a lengthy, formal moniker: the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (in English, Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower). The elaborate, Gothic style structure begun in 1296 was completed in 1436, a remarkable span of 140 years. These architectural pieces in two images I made center on artistic elements: details of texture and form; contrasts involving light and shadow. My actions as always were instinctive. Only on reflection do I sense my greater purpose was to highlight something finite or small while extracting it from something grand. These tiny sections are stunning pieces of art taken from a large, busy, mesmerizing building.
