The work of eradicating modern slavery is never truly done. But rather than a source of exhaustion, I see this as a reminder of the boundless potential for change.

Surely, there are moments when the weight of this mission feels overwhelming—when frustration creeps in, when time for something as simple as a walk in nature slips away. Yet, since founding the Human Thread Foundation in 2017, I have found that every challenge is matched by resilience, every moment of weariness countered by the unwavering belief that a better world is possible.

A Glimmer Beneath the Surface

That belief was renewed in November 2024, deep in the mica mining regions of Jharkhand, India. There, amidst rugged hills and dusty paths, I met a young girl working alongside her parents, chiseling the earth to extract the glimmering shales of mica—minerals that find their way into everything from shimmering cosmetics to glossy car paint.

The mines themselves hold immediate danger: crumbling cave walls that can collapse without warning. Yet, the greatest burden this girl and her family bear is the weight of forced, unpaid labor. Their days are long, their compensation nonexistent—a cycle of poverty perpetuated by an unjust system.

Even so, when I met her, it wasn’t despair that caught my attention. It was her strength. Her small hands gripped her tool with practiced determination, her gaze steady and clear. There was an innocence in her outlook, a quiet belief that her labor meant something—that the sparkling mica she unearthed held the promise of a brighter future.

Build a world for people like me,” she said, her voice unwavering. “Make our dreams come alive.

The Human Thread That Binds Us

Her words lingered long after I left the mines. They reminded me that, while statistics and policies frame the conversation around modern slavery, the heart of this work lies in individual lives. Each child, each family, each community deserves more than survival—they deserve dignity, opportunity, and hope.

The resilience I witnessed in Jharkhand is not unique. It echoes in brick kilns, fishing boats, and factories around the world—wherever vulnerable populations are exploited. But resilience alone is not enough. It must be met with action, with the commitment of those who can amplify these voices and dismantle the systems that perpetuate exploitation.

From Glimmering Shales to Shining Futures

It is easy to feel daunted by the scale of the problem. Yet, every effort matters. Each ethical purchase, each conversation that raises awareness, each policy that protects workers—these are the threads of change that weave together a brighter future.

I am hopeful for the day when the work is done—when no child must trade their dreams for survival, when all sentient beings live in harmony, peace, generosity, and love. Until then, we move forward, step by step, guided by the resilience of those who inspire us to believe in what’s possible.
